Accessibility statement
DecodeDesk is built for teachers of students with dyslexia, and for families at home, so accessibility is part of the product. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.
What we've built in
- Reading display for students: dyslexia-friendly and familiar fonts, adjustable size, letter and line spacing, colored tints, high contrast and a reading ruler. The same settings apply to cards, passages and the student screen.
- Keyboard use: every control works from the keyboard. A skip link jumps to the main content, dialogs keep focus inside and close with Escape, and Live Session has shortcuts (1, 2, 3 to score; arrow keys to move).
- Screen readers: form fields have labels, icon buttons have names, dialogs are announced with their titles, and status messages are read aloud.
- Contrast: text and controls meet WCAG AA contrast in both light and dark themes.
- Motion: animations are turned off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Language: family materials and the home portal are available in English and Spanish.
- Read-aloud: in the family home portal, passages can be read aloud by the device's own voice with each word highlighted, and practice words can be heard on request.
- Alerts and email: teacher alerts and DecodeDesk emails are short, plain text with the key information first, and every email also comes as plain text.
- Recorded audio: teachers can record letter sounds and words in their own voice for students who need to hear them.
Most recent review
On October 1, 2026 we checked the teacher app, the family home portal and the public booking, class and invitation pages for unlabeled controls, missing names on buttons and links, images without text alternatives, heading order and text contrast, and fixed what we found: student initials on colored circles now meet contrast, headings follow a strict order, every clickable item can be reached and used from the keyboard (including tapping words during a timed reading), and alert badges were darkened.
Known limitations
- Charts in reports are images with the key numbers also given in text next to them. A full data table for every chart is still to come.
- The drag-style manipulatives (letter tiles, sound boxes) are tap-based and keyboard-operable, but can be slow with a screen reader. The same activities can be done with the on-screen word lists.
- Video calls rely on your browser's own camera and microphone controls.
